It is essential to educate children about mental health from an early age, as many of the circumstances that contribute to mental health challenges—such as the loss of loved ones, personal disappointments, job loss, or difficult relationships—are often unavoidable.
The purpose of introducing mental health awareness to children is to equip them with healthy coping mechanisms. This enables them to navigate life’s challenges with resilience, rather than resorting to harmful behaviors such as self-harm, self-neglect, or substance use as a means of escape.
Mental health remains a largely unfamiliar subject among children in rural and urban communities, primarily due to limited awareness among parents. Despite this, it significantly influences daily functioning, including work performance, emotional well-being, cognitive ability, and overall physical health.
Our mission focused on raising awareness about the risks and consequences associated with neglecting mental health. In collaboration with a team of child psychologists, we undertook an outreach initiative to share knowledge and provide education within one of the slum communities in Kampala.
